What does "The Genetic Lifeform and UNIX" mean?
It's a parody of "The Genetic Lifeform and DOS"(GLaDOS) from the video game series "Portal". But I believe UNIX is much cooler than DOS, since it is a combination of complexity and simplicity, bureaucracy and playfulness, elegance and chaos - despite catching less attention from the public, thanks to the explosion of PCs in the past decades.
And...here's a piece of philosophy.
This sentence has a deeper meaning. It explores some relationship among the human, the machine and maybe the nature of the universe. While the genetic is something organic, mysterious and extraordinarily sophisticated, UNIX is rather cold, mechanical and minimalist. Yet neither is mathematically well-defined and orthogonal; both embrace a degree of chaos. No living creature is born fully aligned with mathematical definitions and strict deduction. A purely mathematical computing architecture - like LISP machine, however theoretically elegant - had been proven unviable in last century alongside the decline of the first generation of symbolic AI.
It may sound too leaping. But I believe the universe is not a deterministic clockwork of boxes and billiard balls governed by Newtonian mechanics; it's a soup of boiling probabilities, constantly emerging new phenomena every single moment. Perhaps no conscious being will ever understand it entirely.
Why do you think this way?
